Banff, AB – June 20, 2013: The Banff Centre and Jumpwire Media announced today that the inaugural CROSSMEDIA BANFF 2013 (bit.ly/CMBanff) program will open with a keynote speech by Dr. Eric McLuhan who co-authored “Laws of Media” with his legendary father.  The 2-day program taking place on Monday, September 23 and Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the prestigious Banff Centre in the heart of Banff National Park in Alberta, will also feature a special presentation by Andrew McLuhan among 40 top media and digital innovators discussing new technologies and forward-looking business models for engaging audiences of the future across the digital ecosystem.

“The Banff Centre is known for inspiring visionary leaders, and convening trailblazing researchers and ground-breaking artists.  We are delighted to work with Jumpwire Media in bringing Eric McLuhan among the top minds from the media, entertainment, mobile, advertising and distribution industry together to participate in CROSSMEDIA BANFF,” said President of the Banff Centre Jeff Melanson.

Gavin McGarry, President of Jumpwire Media added, “CROSSMEDIA BANFF represents the evolution of our Crossmedia brand. Our partnership with the Banff Centre – a recognized leader in multidisciplinary programming for artists, coupled with our strong line-up of top digital media players including recognized theorist Eric McLuhan and his son Andrew McLuhan, prove our commitment to providing participants with real tangibles on how to create and distribute their digital media ideas and products across the various industry sectors.”

About the Opening Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Eric McLuhan B.Sc., M.A., Ph.D. is an internationally-known and award-winning lecturer on communication and media who has more than 40 years’ teaching experience in subjects ranging from high-speed reading techniques to literature, communication theory, media, culture, and Egyptology.

His research and thinking has been published in books, magazines, and journals covering topics such as media, communications, perception, and literature since 1964. His most recent published work includes “On Media Ecology” (Explorations in Media Ecology, Vol. 5, No. 3), “Theories of Communication” (Hampton Press, 2011), “Media and Formal Cause” (NeoPoesis Press, 2011), and the first three of four books in The Human Equation Toolkit series: “The Human Equation: The Constant in Human Development and Culture From Pre-Literacy to Post-Literacy” (BPS Books, 2010),  “The Science of Investigation: Working with Equations” (BPS Books, 2012), “Know Thyself: Action and Perception” (BPS Books, 2012).

Eric is also deeply involved in the exploration of media ecology and communications, and will discuss the relevance of his late father’s controversial and prophetic theories, and explore the ways in which the idea that the “medium is the message” and that we are a part of a “global village” affects digital media business models and strategies today.

About the Special Presentation – McLuhan Library

Andrew McLuhan, writer, musician and grandson of Marshall McLuhan will preview the ‘McLuhan Library’ to be housed and open to the public at the University of Toronto’s Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library.  The collection of over 6,000 volumes was Marshall’s working library – a series of texts, papers, and books with personal notations, thoughts, jokes, probes, anecdotes and letters. The collection shows Marshall’s entry to the study of media and communications through the works of literature he studied, and provides a ‘track record’ of his intellectual development and maturity.

“Much has been made of his genius, but the majority of his ideas didn’t simply some from nothing. Personally, I believe his genius lay largely in the connections he was able to make between seemingly unrelated things. How a book by an economist on the fur trade in Canada could lead to an idea such as ‘the medium is the message,’” commented Andrew McLuhan. Andrew spent over a year cataloging Marshall McLuhan’s library and documented some of the highlights on the blog (www.inscriptorium.wordpress.com).
